Moving into a first home can be full of emotions ranging from excitement, confusion, and exhaustion. However, frustration will arise when you need an item but it is not available, such as a screwdriver or a mop. In order to make the adjustment period easier, I have compiled a list of things that will help almost all new homeowners.

Lawn Tools

Unless you are planning to live in a condo, the yard of the new home will need attention from time to time. Although all of these items may not be needed, the majority of these will come in handy

  • Lawnmower
  • Water Hose
  • Shovel
  • Shears
  • Rake
  • Sprinkler
  • Snow shovel (location dependent)
  • String trimmer

Having the right tools when the time arises will make certain jobs much easier.

Exterior Door Locks

It is always a safe idea to change all exterior door locks on a new home. You never know who has a spare key from the old place. Setting up new locks provides you with peace of mind that comes from knowing who indeed has a key to your home.

Basic Tool Kit

Regardless of the condition of the home, whether it is brand new or several years old, all homes will have simple repairs that are needed from time to time. Here is a short list of the most common tools that will come in handy.

  • Hammer
  • Pliers/channel Locks
  • Pipe wrench/adjustable wrench
  • Set of open-end wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Measuring tape
  • Tape, both duct and electrical
  • Flashlight
  • Utility knife

These items can be purchased separately if you are familiar with tools. If you don’t know what to get, a general all-purpose kit can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Cleaning Supplies

Like the lawn equipment and basic tools, having a set of cleaning supplies will come in handy at various times throughout the year. Some items may be used infrequently while others may be used weekly or daily.

  • Mop
  • Sweeping broom with dirt pan
  • Toilet brush
  • Window cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Sponges
  • Protective gloves
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Vacuum (if there are carpets)

Most people like to develop a system of daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning tasks in order to keep the home in top shape.

Smoke Alarms

This one cannot be overstated. Smoke alarms can save important possessions and heirlooms as well as irreplaceable lives. Keep the batteries fresh and check that the alarms are working every 4 months.

Set of Extension Cords

There is really no way to predict how many or how often you may need an extension cord. Lamps, small appliances, electronics and all types of other common items will at one time or another be too far away from an electrical outlet. Start off with a set of 3, of varying lengths, and then as time progresses you can decide if you need more and how long they should be.

Fire Extinguisher

Ask any firefighter or homeowner’s insurance agent and they will tell you that all homes need a working fire extinguisher. A simple grease fire in the kitchen or an electrical fire in any part of the home can turn in to a major disaster. An up to date fire extinguisher can help put out a small fire and save lives.

Important Document Storage

It might be a small, 2 drawer filing cabinet or a large, fireproof box. Either way, decide on a system to organize important papers like warranty docs for appliances, copies of receipts for major work done to the home, and instruction manuals to all electronics and appliances. This will come in handy one day.

Final Thoughts On Things New Homeowners Need

Top 8 Things New Homeowners Need

Some of these items, like the cleaning supplies and extension cords, you may have already. Other things, such as the lawn gear and the tools, maybe something that will need to be purchased. Just keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to buy everything all at once. Get the items that are the most crucial, like the cleaning supplies, fire extinguisher, and smoke alarms. Then, as days turn into weeks and then months, you can add to your inventory as money allows.
